First self-hosting tips
2026-11-02
A few things that made the early days of self-hosting a lot less painful:
- Start with one service you actually use. Don’t spin up five things just because you can.
- Back up the data before you change anything. Even a quick
rsync or a snapshot is enough.
- Put a reverse proxy in front early (Caddy or Nginx). HTTPS becomes automatic instead of a later chore.
- Keep a plain-text note of ports, domains, and how to restart each service. You’ll thank yourself later.
Nothing fancy. Just the basics that paid off the first time something broke at 2 a.m.
